Ivanhoe received it's name from the novel by Sir Walter Scott.  For this reason, Ivanhoe is known as the "Storybook" Town.  Its streets are even named from characters in this classic novel.

Ivanhoe traces its history to the Polish people who immigrated to the New Land.  Now the community consists of people from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds.  But the Polish Heritage is kept alive with a celebration each year during the second weekend of August.  It is aptly named Polska Kielbasa Days.  Polish food and other ethnic delicacies are prepared and served by local people and organizations.

The town celebrates with a parade, two days of slow pitch softball games, dances, an annual Miss Ivanhoe Program, a golf tournament, volleyball, square dancing, arts and crafts and many other activities for young and old alike.

Hunters will find Ivanhoe and the surrounding area a bountiful place for wildlife such as ducks, game animals, pheasants, and other waterfowl.  Deer are usually plentiful in wildlife areas near Ivanhoe.  Many local hunters, as well as hunters from metro areas and even out of state hunters make plans for annual hunting trips to Ivanhoe.  Area lakes like Lake Shaokatan provide excellent fishing, boat launching, swimming, water skiing, picnicking, camping with electrical hookups, restrooms and playgrounds.

Adding to the recreational opportunities are two city parks with a beautiful and well-kept swimming pool, two lighted ball fields, bowling lanes, nearby golf course at Hendricks, and downhill skiing at Hole-in-the Mountain County Park at Lake Benton.  Other nearby parks are Anderson Park on Lake Stay located at Arco, only five miles from Ivanhoe:  Norwegian Creek Park located near Lake Benton and Lake Hendricks Park at Hendricks.

Other attractions are Saint Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno, a historical attraction viewed by many.  Wind Towers are located only a few miles from Lake Shaokatan and can be seen up close or from a distance.  Wonderful horticulture in the area.  Be sure to view the flowers as you drive past Bethany Elim Lutheran Church in Ivanhoe.  Parks, trails and monuments in and around Ivanhoe.
